January’s report reflects a stable but cooling labor market, as job growth slowed slightly compared to last year’s pace.

 

Here’s a recap of the January employment situation from the recent BLS Employment Situation Summary released on Friday, February 7, 2025:

 

Unemployment Rate: Decreased to 4.0%

 

The unemployment rate edged down from 4.1% to 4.0% in January, leaving the number of unemployed people at 6.8 million. 

 

Jobs Added: +143,000

 

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 143,000 in January, slightly below the 2024 average monthly gain of 166,000.

 

Here are some of the top industries that saw growth: 

 

Health Care: +44,000 

Retail Trade: +34,000

Social Assistance: +22,000

Government Employment: +32,000

 

Labor Force Participation Rate: Flat at 62.6%

 

Wages and Work Hours: Increased

 

In January, average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls increased by 17 cents (0.5%) to $35.87. Over the past 12 months, average hourly earnings have risen by 4.1%. The average workweek for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls edged down by 0.1 hours to 34.1 hours in January. In manufacturing, the average workweek remained relatively unchanged at 40.0 hours, with overtime steady at 2.8 hours.
