In April 2025, the U.S. labor market continued to show modest growth. Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 177,000, consistent with the prior 12-month average (+152,000), while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.2% for the third consecutive month.

Unemployment Rate: Remains 4.2%

The unemployment rate edged up to 4.2%, with 7.2 million people unemployed.

 

Jobs Added: +177,000

Total nonfarm payroll employment exceeded the prior 12-month average of 158,000 jobs added per month.

 

Top industries showing change:

Health Care: +51,000
Transportation & Warehousing: +29,000
Financial Activities: + 14,000
Social Assistance: +8,000
Government: -9,000

 

Labor Force Participation: Holding Steady at 62.6%

The labor force participation rate showed little movement, remaining consistent with previous months.

 

Wages and Work Hours: Up by 6 Cents

Average hourly earnings increased by $0.06 (0.3%) to $36.06. Over the past year, wages have grown by 3.8%. The average workweek held steady at 34.3 hours.
