In July 2025, the U.S. labor market continued to soften. Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 73,000, indicating minimal growth for the third straight month. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.2%, consistent with its recent range.

Here’s a summary of the latest employment data from the BLS Employment Situation Summary released on Friday, August 1, 2025:

Unemployment Rate: 4.2%

Unemployment rate showed little change at 4.2% with 7.2 million unemployed individuals.

Jobs Added: +73,000

73,000 Jobs were added in July. Revisions for May and June were larger than normal, with a change of +144,000 to +19,000 in May, and a change from +147,000 to +14,000 in June.

The labor force participation rate also showed little change at 62%.

Wages and Work Hours:

The average hourly earnings hit $36.44/hour. The average workweek edged up slightly to 34.3 hours.
