Unemployment Rate: Steady at 4.1%
The national unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1%, with 6.9 million people unemployed. Long-term unemployment accounted for 22.4% of this figure, with little movement compared to prior months.
Jobs Added: +256,000
December saw an increase of 256,000 jobs, up from the revised 212,000 in November. This steady growth capped off a year of notable gains across key sectors:
Health Care: +46,000
Retail Trade: +43,000 (rebounding from a loss in November)
Government: +33,000
Social Assistance: +23,000
Labor Force Participation Rate: Stable at 62.5%
The labor force participation rate held at 62.5%, consistent with its narrow range throughout 2024. Similarly, the employment-population ratio remained steady at 60.0%.
