March’s market showed stronger growth compared to February, with employment gains picking up across a few key industries. Wage growth remained steady, and labor force participation held firm.

 

Here’s a summary of the latest employment data from the BLS Employment Situation Summary released on Friday, April 4, 2025:

 

Unemployment Rate: Slight Increase to 4.2%

 

The unemployment rate edged up to 4.2%, with 7.1 million people unemployed. The rate has remained in a narrow range of 4.0% to 4.2% since May 2024.

 

Jobs Added: +228,000

 

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 228,000 in March, exceeding the prior 12-month average of 158,000 jobs added per month.

 

Top industries showing change:

 

  • Health Care: +54,000
  • Social Assistance: +24,000
  • Retail Trade: +24,000
  • Transportation & Warehousing: +23,000
  • Federal Government: -4,000

 

Labor Force Participation: Holding Steady at 62.5%

 

The labor force participation rate showed little movement, remaining consistent with previous months.

 

Wages and Work Hours: Up by 9 Cents

 

Average hourly earnings increased by $0.09 (0.3%) to $36.00. Over the past year, wages have grown by 3.8%.

 

The average workweek held steady at 34.2 hours.
