Job Report: Information Security Analysts

|

Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the employment rate for information security analysts to grow by 33 percent from 2020 to 2030. This is a much faster rate than the average for all occupations in the U.S. economy, according to BLS’s Occupational Outlook Handbook. BLS reported that:

Demand for information security analysts is expected to be very high. Cyberattacks have grown in frequency, and analysts will be needed to come up with innovative solutions to prevent hackers from stealing critical information or creating problems for computer networks.

Other factors that might cause an increase in the need to hire information security professionals include:

  • Increase in cloud services by small and medium-sized businesses
  • Growing cybersecurity threats to financial institutions, banks, and other corporations
  • Expansion of electronic medical records and assurance of patient privacy

Job Description

BLS describes that information security analysts plan and carry out security measures to protect an organization’s computer networks and systems. With an increase in technology usage and cyberattacks, these analysts’ responsibilities continue to expand. Although they may vary across organizations, many of their duties remain constant, such as:

  • Monitoring security networks
  • Installing and using security software like firewall and data encryption programs
  • Security testing
  • Researching the latest information technology and security trends
  • Developing security standards
  • Making safety recommendations

In addition, information security analysts normally have a bachelor’s degree in related fields like computer science, information assurance, or programming. Some employers desire an MBA in Information Systems. BLS suggests candidates have Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or other general IT or security certificates under their belt. Altogether, depending on factors such as experience level, location, and organization, the average candidate could earn about $103,590 per year, which is the median salary for an information security analyst as of May 2020.
